To represent our attitude going into the last quarter of the year we’ve chosen the brutal yet tender stylings of the latest ItaloJohnson mix. There’s a reason they’ve worked their way to internet illuminati status and it’s partially due to how they innately know what people want to see and hear. Either side of the mix incorporates a balance of wide appeal (Frank Ocean, Soul Clap, Classixx, Dam-Funk, Kindness) while also including some of the well-loved recent bests like Julio Bashmore’s “Au Seve” or Joy Orbison’s “Ellipsis,” and harder-to-digest artists like Trevino or Bambounou. A selection that, if you glance at it, might get written off as a well-selected crowd pleaser, but when you consider the scope and massive size of the audience (Yimmy Yayo has almost 18,500 fans on ) it becomes that much more impressive – it’s mixes like these, when presented in just the right way, that can play a huge part in introducing a number of people to a new genre (this particular Truant owes a lot to similar mixes) and simultaneously satisfying those who are already familiar with every inclusion.

So, courtesy of The Daily Motive, we resurrect this mix he did for the BBC in 2005, composed entirely of the tracks that were sampled to form your favourite rap songs. From straight-up instros that got jacked wholesale to tiny snippets chopped, looped and transformed entirely, they’re all here. Peep the percussive break of The Meters’ “Oh Calcutta!”, which became Amerie’s “One Thing”, or the gorgeous “Summer In The City” from Quincy Jones, sampled approximately four million times but most notably for The Pharcyde’s “Passing Me By”. Then there’s Labi Siffre’s “I Got The”, a song of two halves that gave birth to both Jay-Z’s “Streets Is Watching” AND Eminem’s “My Name Is”. Two simple notes on the bass bore “The Choice Is Yours” from Black Sheep, while Just Blaze used so much of The Chi-Lites’ “That’s How Long” for Jigga’s “December 4th” that he even kept that track’s spoken word sample!
